The Western States Tuition Exchange (WICHE) is a program that allows students from certain western states to pay a reduced tuition rate when attending out-of-state public universities and colleges. The WICHE program is designed to encourage students to pursue opportunities in other states while keeping tuition costs down. The WICHE program is open to students from Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. To be eligible for the program, students must be a resident of one of the eligible states and must be enrolled as an undergraduate student at a participating WICHE institution. The WICHE program provides students with a reduced tuition rate when attending out-of-state public universities and colleges. The reduced tuition rate is generally between 150 and 300 percent of the host institution’s in-state tuition rate. For example, if the in-state tuition rate at a public college in Arizona is $10,000, the WICHE rate might be $15,000. In addition to the reduced tuition rate, students participating in the WICHE program may also be eligible for other financial assistance such as grants and scholarships. These grants and scholarships may be used to help cover the cost of tuition, room and board, books, and other expenses. The WICHE program is a great way for students to explore educational opportunities outside of their home state without having to pay the full cost of out-of-state tuition.
